Second place for watchtower 'The Weusthag'!

Last week, Marko Matic of IAA Architecten and his design team won second place in the design competition for a lookout tower in the green area of the Weusthag, to the north of Hengelo. The tower stands out for its uniformity and slim waist, and was designed in close cooperation with specialists from the IHC Merwede shipyard.

The tower is made of corten steel and perforated with a continuous leaf pattern. The design team was inspired by the tree of life, which symbolises this fertile place, and by a chalice which symbolises connection and friendship. These themes refer to the park-like location, and to the city of Hengelo, which is known as a steel city. By building the tower in cooperation with the practical education in the region, this connection is underlined once again.
